﴿وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡقُرُونَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُواْ وَجَآءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ وَمَا كَانُواْ لِيُؤۡمِنُواْۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ ﴾
[يُونس: 13]
﴿ولقد أهلكنا القرون من قبلكم لما ظلموا وجاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات وما كانوا﴾ [يُونس: 13]
| Dr Kamal Omar And indeed, We destroyed generations before you for what they transgressed. And came to them their Messengers with Al-Bayyinat but they were not (such) as to Believe. Thus We reward the nation of criminals |
| Dr Laleh Bakhtiar And, certainly, We caused to perish generations before you when they did wrong while their Messengers drew near with the clear portents, but they had not been such as to believe. Thus, We give recompense to the folk, the ones who sin |
| Dr Munir Munshey We annihilated many towns prior to you, because their residents became unjust and evil. The messengers brought them clear proofs, yet they were determined not to believe! This is how We punish the criminal nations |
| Edward Henry Palmer We have already destroyed generations before you when they did wrong, and there came to them their apostles with manifest signs, but they would not believe. Thus do we reward the sinful people |

| Maududi Surely We destroyed the nations (which had risen to heights of glory in their times) before you when they indulged in wrong-doing and refused to believe even when their Messengers brought clear signs to them. Thus do We recompense the people who are guilty |
