﴿وَلَمَّا دَخَلُواْ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ أَمَرَهُمۡ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغۡنِي عَنۡهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَيۡءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةٗ فِي نَفۡسِ يَعۡقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَاۚ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلۡمٖ لِّمَا عَلَّمۡنَٰهُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ ﴾
[يُوسُف: 68]
﴿ولما دخلوا من حيث أمرهم أبوهم ما كان يغني عنهم من الله﴾ [يُوسُف: 68]
Dr Kamal Omar And when they entered in the manner their father had commanded them, it was not that it could benefit them against Allah in any way, except that a desire in the mind of Yaqub which he fulfilled. And indeed he (i.e., Yaqub) was surely possessed of knowledge because of what We taught him. But the majority of mankind do not know (these facts) |
Dr Laleh Bakhtiar And when they entered from where their father commanded, it had not been availing them against God in anything, but it was a need of Jacob’s inner self which he satisfied. And, truly, he was a possessor of knowledge because We taught him, except most of humanity knows not |

George Sale And when they entered the city, as their father had commanded them, it was of no advantage unto them against the decree of God; and the same served only to satisfy the desire of Jacob's soul, which he had charged them to perform: For he was indued with knowledge of that which We had taught him; but the greater part of men do not understand |
Maududi And it so happened that when they entered the city (by many gates) as their father had directed them, this precautionary measure proved ineffective against Allah´s will. There was an uneasiness in Jacob´s soul which he so tried to remove. Surely he was possessed of knowledge owing to the knowledge that We bestowed upon him. But most people do not know the truth of the matter |
