﴿يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَقَالُواْ لِإِخۡوَٰنِهِمۡ إِذَا ضَرَبُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَوۡ كَانُواْ غُزّٗى لَّوۡ كَانُواْ عِندَنَا مَا مَاتُواْ وَمَا قُتِلُواْ لِيَجۡعَلَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ حَسۡرَةٗ فِي قُلُوبِهِمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ يُحۡيِۦ وَيُمِيتُۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِيرٞ ﴾
[آل عِمران: 156]
﴿ياأيها الذين آمنوا لا تكونوا كالذين كفروا وقالوا لإخوانهم إذا ضربوا في﴾ [آل عِمران: 156]
| Dr Kamal Omar O you people who have Believed! Be not like those who have disbelieved and said about their brethren when they travelled through the earth, or were those who fight (in Allah’s Way): “If they had been with us, they would not have died and would not have been killed,” so that Allah may make it a cause of regret in their hearts. And (it is) Allah That gives life and causes death. And Allah is All-Seer of what you do |

Be not like those who were ungrateful and said about their brothers when they traveled through the earth or had been ones who are combatants: If they had been with us, neither would they have died, nor would they have been slain, so that God makes this a cause of regret in their hearts. And God gives life and causes to die. And God is Seeing of what you do |
| Dr Munir Munshey Oh you who believe! Do not be like the unbelievers. About their brothers who travel in the land or go into battle, they say, "Had they been with us they would not have died. They would not have been killed. " Allah has let such notions be the source of (sorrow and) a bewailing (mournful) lament in their hearts. It is Allah Who gives life and death! And Allah watches everything you do |

It was that God might make a sighing in their hearts, for God gives life and death; and God on what ye do doth look |
| Farook Malik O ye who believe! Be not like the unbelievers, who say of their brethren, when they are traveling through the earth or engaged in fighting: "If they had stayed with us, they would not have died, or been slain." This that Allah may make it a cause of sighs and regrets in their hearts. It is Allah that gives Life and Death, and Allah sees well all that ye do |
| George Sale O true believers, be not as they who believed not, and said of their brethren, when they had journeyed in the land or had been at war, if they had been with us, those had not died, nor had these been slain: Whereas what befell them was so ordained that God might make it matter of sighing in their hearts. God giveth life, and causeth to die: And God seeth that which ye do |
| Maududi Believers, do not behave like those who disbelieved and say to their brothers (who meet some mishap) in the course of their journey for fighting: ´Had they remained with us, they would not have died nor been slain.´ Allah makes such thoughts the cause of deep regrets in their hearts. For in truth it is Allah alone who grants life and deals death. Allah sees all that you do |
