﴿۞ قَالُوٓاْ إِن يَسۡرِقۡ فَقَدۡ سَرَقَ أَخٞ لَّهُۥ مِن قَبۡلُۚ فَأَسَرَّهَا يُوسُفُ فِي نَفۡسِهِۦ وَلَمۡ يُبۡدِهَا لَهُمۡۚ قَالَ أَنتُمۡ شَرّٞ مَّكَانٗاۖ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَصِفُونَ ﴾
[يُوسُف: 77]
﴿قالوا إن يسرق فقد سرق أخ له من قبل فأسرها يوسف في﴾ [يُوسُف: 77]
Dr Kamal Omar (Half-brothers together) said: “If he steals, so without doubt did steal a brother-german to him, before.” So Yusuf kept it (i.e., the emotional reaction to this false charge) hidden in himself and he did not make it evident before them; (and only) said: "You people are in a dangerous form, and Allah knows better what you allege.” |
Dr Laleh Bakhtiar They said: If he steals, surely, a brother of his stole before. But Joseph kept it secret within himself, not showing it to them. He said: You are in a worse place. And God is greater in knowledge of what you allege |
Dr Munir Munshey They said, "He is not alone! His brother, too, had committed a theft earlier." Yusuf swallowed that remark and disclosed nothing. In his heart, he said, "You are indeed, of an evil status! And Allah knows what you describe |
Edward Henry Palmer They said, 'If he has stolen, a brother of his has stolen before him.' But Joseph kept it secret in his soul and disclosed it not to them. Said he, 'Ye are in a bad case, and God knows best about what ye describe |
Farook Malik At this accusation, his brothers remarked: "This is not strange if he has committed a theft for his brother also committed a theft before him." Hearing this, Joseph suppressed his feelings and did not reveal anything to them - he simply whispered to himself: "What a bad people you are! You are accusing me of something, the truth of which Allah knows best |
George Sale His brethren said, if Benjamin be guilty of theft, his brother Joseph hath been also guilty of theft heretofore. But Joseph concealed these things in his mind, and did not discover them unto them: And he said within himself, ye are in a worse condition than us two; and God best knoweth what ye discourse about |
Maududi They said: "No wonder that he steals for a brother of his stole before." But Joseph kept his reaction to himself without disclosing the truth to them. He merely said to himself: "You are an evil lot. Allah knows well the truth of the accusation that you are making against me (to my face) |
