﴿قَالُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنۢبَغِي لَنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ مِن دُونِكَ مِنۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَ وَلَٰكِن مَّتَّعۡتَهُمۡ وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ نَسُواْ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَكَانُواْ قَوۡمَۢا بُورٗا ﴾
[الفُرقَان: 18]
﴿قالوا سبحانك ما كان ينبغي لنا أن نتخذ من دونك من أولياء﴾ [الفُرقَان: 18]
Dr Kamal Omar They said: “Glorified be You! It was not that it may suit us that we may pick up auliya besides You; but You bestowed on them and their fathers (provisions much beyond their needs) till they forgot Az-Zikr (‘The Message’) and became a nation completely doomed |
Dr Laleh Bakhtiar They would say: Glory be to Thee! It had not been fit and proper for us to take to ourselves any protectors other than Thee. But Thou hadst given them enjoyment and their fathers until they forgot the Remembrance and had been a lost folk |
Dr Munir Munshey They will say, "Glory be to You! It is not right for us to accept any patrons other than You! You had them and their parents enjoy plenty of comforts. But, they disregarded the warnings and became a doomed people |
Edward Henry Palmer They shall say, 'Celebrated be Thy praise, it was not befitting for us to take any patrons but Thee; but Thou didst give them and their fathers enjoyment until they forgot the Reminder and were a lost people |
Farook Malik Those deities will answer: "Glory be to You! It was not befitting for us that we could take any guardian besides You, but You let them and their forefathers enjoy the comforts of worldly life until they forgot the Reminder, and thereby became worthless people |
George Sale They shall answer, God forbid! It was not fitting for us, that we should take any protectors besides Thee: But Thou didst permit them and their fathers to enjoy abundance; so that they forgot thy admonition, and became lost people |
Maududi They will answer, "Glory be to Thee! We dared not take anyguardian besides Thee: (they were misled because) Thou didst give them and their forefathers all the good things of life till they forgot the Admonition, and incurred the punishment |
