﴿وَإِذۡ قَالَت طَّآئِفَةٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَٰٓأَهۡلَ يَثۡرِبَ لَا مُقَامَ لَكُمۡ فَٱرۡجِعُواْۚ وَيَسۡتَـٔۡذِنُ فَرِيقٞ مِّنۡهُمُ ٱلنَّبِيَّ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ بُيُوتَنَا عَوۡرَةٞ وَمَا هِيَ بِعَوۡرَةٍۖ إِن يُرِيدُونَ إِلَّا فِرَارٗا ﴾
[الأحزَاب: 13]
﴿وإذ قالت طائفة منهم ياأهل يثرب لا مقام لكم فارجعوا ويستأذن فريق﴾ [الأحزَاب: 13]
| Dr Kamal Omar And when a group from amongst them said: “O residents of Yathrib! There is no position for you (to fight or win), therefore go back (in retreat).” And a band of them asks An-Nabi for permission (to leave the battle field). They say: 'Our houses lie unprotected and exposed,' although they lay not open and exposed. Intend they not but (only) running away (from the encounter) |
| Dr Laleh Bakhtiar And when a section of them said: O people of Yathrib! There is no habitation for you, so return. A group of people ask permission of the Prophet among them saying: Truly, Our houses are exposed. But they were not exposed. They want only to run away |
| Dr Munir Munshey A group of them announced, "Oh people of ´Yathrib´ (Medina)! This is not the place to stand the attack. Turn back!" Some of them approached the prophet seeking permission to depart. They said their homes were in danger. Their homes were not in danger. They just wanted to flee |

And a part of them asked leave of the prophet (to return), saying, 'Verily, our houses are defenceless;' but they were not defenceless, they only wished for flight |

And yet another party of them sought leave of the Prophet saying: "In fact our houses are insecure," whereas they were not insecure. They intended nothing but to run away from the battlefront |
| George Sale And when a party of them said, O inhabitants of Yathreb, there is no place of security for you here; wherefore return home. And a part of them asked leave of the prophet to depart, saying, verily our houses are defenceless and exposed to the enemy: But they were not defenceless; and their intention was no other than to fly |
| Maududi And when a section of them said: "(O people of Yathrib), now there is no place for you to stay, so turn back." (And call to mind) when a section of them was seeking permission from the Prophet to leave, saying: "Our houses are exposed (to attack)," although they were not exposed (to attack); they only wished to flee (from the battle-front) |
