﴿مَّا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِرَجُلٖ مِّن قَلۡبَيۡنِ فِي جَوۡفِهِۦۚ وَمَا جَعَلَ أَزۡوَٰجَكُمُ ٱلَّٰٓـِٔي تُظَٰهِرُونَ مِنۡهُنَّ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمۡۚ وَمَا جَعَلَ أَدۡعِيَآءَكُمۡ أَبۡنَآءَكُمۡۚ ذَٰلِكُمۡ قَوۡلُكُم بِأَفۡوَٰهِكُمۡۖ وَٱللَّهُ يَقُولُ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَهُوَ يَهۡدِي ٱلسَّبِيلَ ﴾
[الأحزَاب: 4]
﴿ما جعل الله لرجل من قلبين في جوفه وما جعل أزواجكم اللائي﴾ [الأحزَاب: 4]
| Dr Kamal Omar Allah has not placed for any man two hearts inside his thorax; and He has not made your wives as your mothers whom: unto whom you utter ‘Az-Zihar’ [the ‘game of backs’ (i.e., you call their backs as the backs of your mothers and then discontinue marital relations with them)]. And He has not regarded your adopted ones (or your called-ones) as your (real) sons. This, for you, is your own statement emitted by your mouths, while Allah gives the True statement and He guides to the (Permanent) Path |
| Dr Laleh Bakhtiar And God made not two hearts for any man in his interior. Nor made He your spouses those whom you divorced saying: Be as the back of my mother! Nor made He your adopted sons, your sons. That is but a saying of your mouths. And God says The Truth and He guides to the way |
| Dr Munir Munshey Allah has not placed two hearts in any person´s body. He does not render your wife to be like your mother simply because you swear and declare her to be like your mother. He does not consider your adopted sons to be like your own begotten sons. These are mere expressions that escape your lips. Allah declares the truth and guides you on to the (right) path |
| Edward Henry Palmer God has not made for any man two hearts in his inside; nor has He made your wives,- whom you back away from,- your real mothers; nor has He made your adopted sons your real sons. That is what ye speak with your mouths; but God speaks the truth and He guides to the path |
| Farook Malik Allah has not put two hearts in a person’s body: nor does He regard your wives whom you divorce through Zihar (divorcing a wife saying: from now on you are as my mother, depriving her conjugal rights yet keeping her like a slave nor letting her marry anyone else) as your mothers: nor does He regard your adopted sons as your sons. These are mere words which you utter with your mouths; but Allah declares the Truth and guides you to the Right Way |
| George Sale God hath not given a man two hearts within him; neither hath he made your wives -- some of whom ye divorce, regarding them thereafters as your mothers -- your true mothers; nor hath he made your adopted sons your true sons. This is your saying in your mouths: But God speaketh the truth ; and he directeth the right way |
| Maududi Allah has never put two hearts within one person´s body; nor has He made your wives, whom you compare to your mothers´ backs (to divorce them), your true mothers; nor has He made those whom you adopt as sons your own sons. These are only words that you utter with your mouths. But Allah proclaims the Truth and directs you to the Right Path |
