Dr Kamal Omar Indeed, there had been for you Uswatun Hasanatun (an ideal life-pattern) in Ibrahim and the people who (were) with him when they said to their nation: “Verily, we are detached from you and from what you worship besides Allah. We have rejected you and there has started between us and between you hostility and hatred for ever — until you develop Faith in Allah — in His Oneness— excluding the statement of Ibrahim regarding his father: 'Surely, I will ask for forgiveness (from Allah) for you', although I do not own any thing from Allah for your benefit. (Then Ibrahim invoked Allah thus:) “Our Nourisher-Sustainer! In You we have put (our) trust, and to You we have turned (in repentance), and to You (is) the final Return |
Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Surely, there had been a fairer, good example for you in Abraham and those with him when they said to their folk: Truly, we are released from obligation to you and whatever you worship other than God. We disbelieved in you. Shown itself between us and between you was enmity and hatred eternally until you believe in One God, but for Abraham saying to his father: Truly, I will ask for forgiveness for thee and I possess not anything for thee before God. Our Lord! In Thee we put our trust and to Thee we were penitent and to Thee is the Homecoming |
Dr Munir Munshey There has been an excellent example for you in Ibraheem, and those with him. They said to their people, "(We hereby declare that) we are free of all guilt concerning you, and the gods you worship other than Allah. We renounce you (and your faith). There has appeared between us hatred, and hostility forever, until you come to believe in Allah (exclusively)." Ibraheem´s remarks to his father was an exception. (He had said), "I will seek forgiveness for you from Allah. (But) I lack the authority to get anything (at all) for you from Allah." (Ibraheem turned to Allah and said), "Our Lord! Upon You we rely and towards You we turn in repentance! Towards You is our journey back |
Edward Henry Palmer Ye had a good example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, 'Verily, we are clear of you and of what ye serve beside God. We disbelieve in you: and between us and you is enmity and hatred begun for ever, until ye believe in God alone!' But not the speech of Abraham to his father, 'Verily, I will ask forgiveness for thee, though I cannot control aught from God!' O our Lord! on thee do we rely! and unto thee we turn! and unto thee the journey is |
Farook Malik You have an excellent example in Abraham and his companions. They said to their people plainly: "We are clear of you and your gods, whom you worship besides Allah. We renounce you. Enmity and hate shall reign between us forever until you believe in Allah, the One and Only God." But do not emulate what Abraham said to his father: "I will pray for your forgiveness, although I have no power to get anything for you from Allah." Their collective prayer was: "Our Lord! In You we have put our trust, to You we turn in repentance and to You is our final goal |
George Sale Ye have an excellent pattern in Abraham, and those who were with him, when they said unto their people, verily we are clear of you, and of the idols which ye worship, besides God: We have renounced you; and enmity and hatred is begun between us and you for ever, until ye believe in God alone: Except Abraham's saying unto his father, verily I will beg pardon for thee; but I cannot obtain ought of God in thy behalf. O Lord, in thee do we trust, and unto thee are we turned; and before thee shall we be assembled hereafter |
Maududi You have a good example in Abraham and his companions: they said to their people: "We totally dissociate ourselves from you, and from the deities that you worship instead of Allah. We renounce you and there has come to be enmity and hatred between us and you until you believe in Allah, the One True God." (But you may not emulate) Abraham´s saying to his father: "Certainly I will ask pardon for you, although I have no power over Allah to obtain anything on your behalf." (And Abraham and his companions prayed): "Our Lord, in You have we put our trust, and to You have we turned, and to You is our ultimate return |
