﴿ٱلَّذِينَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ ظَالِمِيٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡۖ فَأَلۡقَوُاْ ٱلسَّلَمَ مَا كُنَّا نَعۡمَلُ مِن سُوٓءِۭۚ بَلَىٰٓۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمُۢ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ﴾
[النَّحل: 28]
﴿الذين تتوفاهم الملائكة ظالمي أنفسهم فألقوا السلم ما كنا نعمل من سوء﴾ [النَّحل: 28]
Dr Kamal Omar Those whom the angels cause to die while they are those who transgress against their souls, (then while leaving this world and becoming a witness to death) they offered submission (to Islam) saying: “We did not use to commit any evil!” Nay! Surely Allah is All-Aware what you used to do |
Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Those whom the angels call to themselves while they are ones who are unjust to themselves. Then, they will give a proposal of surrender: We had not been doing any evil. Yea! Truly, God is Knowing of what you had been doing |
Dr Munir Munshey The angels shall proceed to seize their souls. They __ those who had harmed themselves __ will attempt to strike peace, and will say, "We were not doing anything evil!" .... (Really)? .... "Of course, you were! Allah knows very well what you used to do |

Farook Malik those whom the angels cause to die while they were still engaged in doing injustice to their own souls. At the time of death they offer submission, saying: "We were not doing anything wrong." The angels will reply: "O Yea! How dare you deny! Certainly Allah is aware of what you were doing |
George Sale They whom the angels shall cause to die, having dealt unjustly with their own souls, shall offer to make their peace in the article of death, saying, we have done no evil. But the angels shall reply, yea; verily God well knoweth that which ye have wrought |
Maududi the same unbelievers who, when the angels seize them and cause them to die while they are engaged in wrong-doing, they will proffer their submission saying: "We were engaged in no evil." (The angels will answer them): "Surely Allah knows well all that you did |
