﴿وَإِذَا لَقُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ قَالُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَا بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ قَالُوٓاْ أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم بِمَا فَتَحَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لِيُحَآجُّوكُم بِهِۦ عِندَ رَبِّكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ﴾
[البَقَرَة: 76]
﴿وإذا لقوا الذين آمنوا قالوا آمنا وإذا خلا بعضهم إلى بعض قالوا﴾ [البَقَرَة: 76]
| Dr Kamal Omar And when they came across those who have become Believers, they said: “We have Believed,” but when they met one another in privacy they said: “ Shall you describe to them what Allah has unveiled on you that they may engage you in argument about it in presence of your Nourisher-Sustainer? What then! Don’t you understand?” |
| Dr Laleh Bakhtiar And when they met those who believed, they said: We believed. And when they went privately—some of them with some others—they said: Will you divulge to them what God opened to you, so that they argue with you about it before your Lord? Will you not, then, be reasonable |
| Dr Munir Munshey When they meet the believers, they say, "We believe!" But when they are alone with each other, they say, "Would you report to them what Allah has revealed to you? So they may (successfully) argue and plead against you before your Lord? Do you not understand |

So that they (Muslims) may use it as an argument against you in the court of your Lord? Have you no sense |
| George Sale And when they meet the true believers, they say, we believe: But when they are privately assembled together, they say, will ye acquaint them with what God hath revealed unto you, that they may dispute with you concerning it in the presence of your Lord? Do ye not therefore understand |
| Maududi When they meet those who believe in Muhammad, they say, "We also believe in him." But when they meet one another in private, they say, "Have you got no sense that you disclose to them those things which Allah has revealed to you so that they might bring them as a proof against you before your Lord |
