﴿مَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَن يُؤۡتِيَهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡحُكۡمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ ثُمَّ يَقُولَ لِلنَّاسِ كُونُواْ عِبَادٗا لِّي مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَٰكِن كُونُواْ رَبَّٰنِيِّـۧنَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تُعَلِّمُونَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَبِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَدۡرُسُونَ ﴾
[آل عِمران: 79]
﴿ما كان لبشر أن يؤتيه الله الكتاب والحكم والنبوة ثم يقول للناس﴾ [آل عِمران: 79]
| Dr Kamal Omar It suits not a human being that Allah may give him Al-Kitab and Al-Hukm (The Verdict) and An-Nubuwwah, then he says to people: “Be Ibad to me in derogation to Allah.” On the contrary (Allah tells them): “Be you Rabbaniyyun because you transmit and teach (the knowledge of) Al-Kitab and because you had been studying (it).” |
| Dr Laleh Bakhtiar It had not been for a mortal that God should give him the Book and critical judgment and the prophethood and, again, he say to humanity: Be you servants of me instead of God! Rather, he would say: Be you masters, because you had been teaching the Book and because you had been studying it |

On the contrary he would say: "Be devoted worshippers of your Lord in accordance with the Holy Book you have been teaching and reading |
| George Sale It is not fit for a man, that God should give him a book of revelations, and wisdom, and prophecy; and then he should say unto men, be ye worshippers of me, besides God; but he ought to say, be ye perfect in knowledge and in works, since ye know the scriptures, and exercise your selves therein |
| Maududi It does not befit a man that Allah should grant him His Book and sound judgement and prophet-hood, and thereafter he should say to men: ´Become servants to me apart from Allah.´ He would rather say: ´Become dedicated men of Allah, in accord with the dictates of the Book you have been teaching and studying.´ |
