﴿فَلَوۡلَا نَصَرَهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُواْ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ قُرۡبَانًا ءَالِهَةَۢۖ بَلۡ ضَلُّواْ عَنۡهُمۡۚ وَذَٰلِكَ إِفۡكُهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُواْ يَفۡتَرُونَ ﴾
[الأحقَاف: 28]
﴿فلولا نصرهم الذين اتخذوا من دون الله قربانا آلهة بل ضلوا عنهم﴾ [الأحقَاف: 28]
| Dr Kamal Omar So why didn’t help them those whom they adopted besides Allah as a way of nearness (to Him) — as aaliha (gods)? Nay! They deserted them. And that is their lie (that they need a false god for attaining nearness to the Real God), and this is what they used to forge and invent (as a belief and as a practice) |
| Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Then, why helped them not those whom they took to themselves other than God as gods as a mediator. Nay! They went astray from them. And that was their calumny and what they had been devising |

| George Sale Did those protect them, whom they took for gods, besides God, and imagined to be honoured with his familiarity? Nay; they withdrew from them: Yet this was their false opinion which seduced them, and the blasphemy which they had devised |
| Maududi So why did those whom they had set up as gods apart from Allah, hoping that they would bring them nearer to Him, not come to their aid? Instead, they failed them. This was the end of the lie they had fabricated and the false beliefs they had invented |
