[المَائدة: 18]

The Jews and the Christians say: "We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones". Say to them Muhammad: "Why then does He punish you and afflict you with pain and suffering in requital for your evil deeds! Indeed you are but creatures constituting a part of those He brought into being and caused to exist. He forgives whom He will and torments whom He will. To Him alone belong all that is in the heavens and on earth and all in between. He is the end and the purpose for which all are destined

Dr Kamal Omar
And said Al-Yahood and An-Nasaaraa: “We are the children of Allah and the loved ones to Him.” Say: “Then, for what (reason) does He punish you because of your sins?” Nay! You are human (beings) out of that He has created. He forgives for whom He thinks proper and He punishes whom He thinks proper. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between those two, and to Him is the Final Abode
Dr Laleh Bakhtiar
And the Jews and Christians said: We are the children of God and His beloved. Say: Why, then, does He punish you for your impieties? Nay! You are mortals whom He created. He forgives whom He wills and He punishes whom He wills. And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is even between the two. And to Him is the Homecoming
Dr Munir Munshey
(Both) the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allah and we are dearer to Him than all others." Ask them, "Then, why does He punish you (and makes you pay) for your sins. In fact, you are humans like all others He has created. He forgives whom He wants, and He punishes whom He wants! To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and everything else between them. Towards Him is the final return (of all beings)
Edward Henry Palmer
But the Jews and the Christians say, 'We are the sons of God and His beloved.' Say, 'Why then does He punish you for your sins? nay, ye are mortals of those whom He has created! He pardons whom He pleases, and punishes whom He pleases; for God's is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and what is between the two, and unto Him the journey is

The Jews and the Christians say: "We are the children of Allah and His beloved ones." Ask them, "Why then does He punish you for your sins? Nay! In fact you are human beings like others which He has created. He forgives whom He pleases and He punishes whom He pleases. To Allah belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and to Him is the final refuge
George Sale
The Jews and the Christians say, we are the children of God, and his beloved. Answer, why therefore doth he punish you for your sins? Nay, but ye are men, of those whom he hath created. He forgiveth whom he pleaseth, and punisheth whom he pleaseth, and unto God belongeth the kingdom of heaven and earth, and of what is contained between them both; and unto him shall all things return
Maududi
The Jews and the Christians say: ´We are Allah´s children and His beloved ones.´ Ask them: ´Why, then, does He chastise you for your sins?´ You are the same as other men He has created. He forgives whom He wills and chastises whom He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them. To Him is the eventual return
