﴿وَلَوۡ كَانُواْ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلنَّبِيِّ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡهِ مَا ٱتَّخَذُوهُمۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَ وَلَٰكِنَّ كَثِيرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ فَٰسِقُونَ ﴾
[المَائدة: 81]
﴿ولو كانوا يؤمنون بالله والنبي وما أنـزل إليه ما اتخذوهم أولياء ولكن﴾ [المَائدة: 81]
Dr Kamal Omar And had they been Believing in Allah and in the Prophet and what has been sent to him, they would not have taken them as auliya. But a vast majority among them are the Fasiqun |

Maududi For had they truly believed in Allah and the Messenger and what was sent down to him, they would not have taken unbelievers (instead of believers) for their allies. But many of them have rebelled against Allah altogether |
