﴿لِّكَيۡلَا تَأۡسَوۡاْ عَلَىٰ مَا فَاتَكُمۡ وَلَا تَفۡرَحُواْ بِمَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخۡتَالٖ فَخُورٍ ﴾
[الحدِيد: 23]
﴿لكيلا تأسوا على ما فاتكم ولا تفرحوا بما آتاكم والله لا يحب﴾ [الحدِيد: 23]
Dr Kamal Omar (This is) in order that you may not be sad over what left or bypassed you, and do not indulge in merry-mahead of state about that which He bestowed on you. And Allah does not like any one who is a proud boaster |
Dr Laleh Bakhtiar so that you not grieve over what slipped away from you nor be glad because of what was given to you. And God loves not any proud, boaster |
Dr Munir Munshey So that you would not feel morose (and mournful) over matters that elude you. (And so that) you would not exult (and gloat) over what He grants you. (Indeed), Allah does not like the arrogant braggart |
Edward Henry Palmer That ye may not vex yourselves for what ye miss, nor be overjoyed at what He gives you; for God loves no arrogant boaster |
Farook Malik This is done so that you may not grieve for the things that you miss, or be overjoyed at what you gain; for Allah does not love any vainglorious boaster |
George Sale And this is written lest ye immoderately grieve for the good which escapeth you, or rejoice for that which happeneth unto you; for God loveth no proud or vain-glorious person |
Maududi (We do so) that you may not grieve over the loss you suffer, nor exult over what He gave you. Allah does not love the vainglorious, the boastful |
