﴿سَيَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشۡرَكُواْ لَوۡ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَآ أَشۡرَكۡنَا وَلَآ ءَابَآؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمۡنَا مِن شَيۡءٖۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ حَتَّىٰ ذَاقُواْ بَأۡسَنَاۗ قُلۡ هَلۡ عِندَكُم مِّنۡ عِلۡمٖ فَتُخۡرِجُوهُ لَنَآۖ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنۡ أَنتُمۡ إِلَّا تَخۡرُصُونَ ﴾
[الأنعَام: 148]
﴿سيقول الذين أشركوا لو شاء الله ما أشركنا ولا آباؤنا ولا حرمنا﴾ [الأنعَام: 148]
| Dr Kamal Omar Soon will say those who have intermingled partners (in the Authority of Allah): “If Allah had willed we would not have indulged in shirk and nor our fore-fathers, and we (through our man-written books) would not have declared forbidden anything (in addition to the genuine prohibitions listed in Al-Kitab).” Likewise belied those who were before them, till they tasted Our wrath. Say: “Is (there) with you (any thing) out of knowledge then produce it before us? You follow nothing except conjecture. And you do nothing but indulge in mythology and concoctions |
| Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Those who ascribed partners with God will say: If God willed, neither would we have ascribed partners with God, nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything. Thus, denied those who were before them until they experienced Our might. Say: Is there any knowledge with you that you bring out to us? You follow not but opinion and, then, you only guess |
| Dr Munir Munshey Those who set up partners (to worship) besides Allah will surely say, "Had Allah so willed we and our forefathers could neither have set up partners with Allah, nor prohibited anything (against His will)." People prior to them had disbelieved in that same manner, right until they tasted Our torment. Say, "If you have any specific knowledge then bring it out and show us. You merely pursue your presumptions! You just guess and speculate |
| Edward Henry Palmer Those who associate others with God will say, 'Had God pleased, we had not so associated, nor our fathers; nor should we have forbidden aught.' Thus did they give the lie to those who came before them, until they tasted of our violence! Say, 'Have ye any knowledge? if so, bring it forth to us: ye only follow suspicion, and ye do but conjecture |
| Farook Malik In response to this the pagans will promptly say: "If Allah wanted, neither we nor our forefathers would have been pagans, or we could have made anything unlawful." That is how their ancestors rejected the truth in the past until they tasted of Our punishment. If they say so, then ask them: "Do you have any evidence that you can put before us? The fact of the matter is, you believe in nothing but conjecture and follow nothing but falsehood |

Thus did they who were before them accuse the prophets of imposture, until they tasted our severe punishment. Say, is there with you any certain knowledge of what ye alledge, that ye may produce it unto us? Ye follow only a false imagination; and ye only utter lies |
| Maududi Those who associate others with Allah in His divinity will now surely say: ´Had Allah willed, neither we nor our forefathers would have associated others with Allah in His divinity, nor would we have declared anything (which Allah did not forbid) as forbidden.´ Even so those who had lived before them gave the lie (to the Truth) until they tasted Our chastisement. Tell them: ´Have you any sure knowledge that you can produce before us? In fact you are only following idle fancies, merely conjecturing.´ |
