يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ (1)
O you who are clothed in heavy attire and falling asleep |
قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا (2)
Stand fair by night except for a little |
نِّصْفَهُ أَوِ انقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا (3)
About half of it or less the little |
أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا (4)
or about half of it and increase the little, and recite the Quran with measured flow of words and due correlation and interdependence of parts featuring musical sound depending on systematic grouping of notes and producing a harmonious whole |
إِنَّا سَنُلْقِي عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا (5)
We shall lay on you a momentous message to declare in words and to say it out |
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ اللَّيْلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطْئًا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا (6)
The Calm and silence of the dead hours of the night make the soul sensible to the presence of Allah and impress piety upon one's heart and bring on that wisdom which the Divine hand imprints in his works |
إِنَّ لَكَ فِي النَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا (7)
You have all day long to attend to the world and its pursuits |
وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا (8)
Always keep Allah in mind and invoke His Name and dedicate yourself to Him and appeal to Him for aid and protection |
رَّبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا (9)
He is the Creator of the east and the west; there is no Ilah but He; take Him upon trust and depend on Him |
وَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَاهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا (10)
Be patient and forbear their -the Pagans- insults, and avoid them nicely, for true nobleness teaches forbearance from so foul a wrong |
وَذَرْنِي وَالْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُولِي النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا (11)
and leave to Me the wealthy who deny Allah and lack the spiritual apprehension of divine truth and bear with them for a while and put them in respite |
إِنَّ لَدَيْنَا أَنكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا (12)
We have all sorts of fetters, chains and shackles for the feet to impose restraint, confinement and defeat |
وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا (13)
And food highly offensive, nauseous and choking, and punishment hurting, afflictive, grievous and causing excruciating pain |
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا (14)
One Day the earth and the mountains shall be thrown into earthquakes, volcanoes and convulsions, and the mountains cave in and become like wind- drifted sand |
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَاهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا (15)
O you people, We have sent you a Messenger who shall bear witness to your deeds and actions just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh |
فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا (16)
But Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and so he came within the measure of Our wrath which spoke thunder and We subverted him, ruined him and brought him to nought |
فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ شِيبًا (17)
So if you people deny Allah, how would you avoid the Day of horror which shall make children's hair turn white |
السَّمَاءُ مُنفَطِرٌ بِهِ ۚ كَانَ وَعْدُهُ مَفْعُولًا (18)
It is a Day of violent physical disturbance that rends the heaven to pieces |
إِنَّ هَٰذِهِ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ سَبِيلًا (19)
These revelations present an admonition for him who wishes to follow the path prescribed by Allah, his Creator, and to assent to His system of faith and worship |
۞ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَائِفَةٌ مِّنَ الَّذِينَ مَعَكَ ۚ وَاللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرْضَىٰ ۙ وَآخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ اللَّهِ ۙ وَآخَرُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ ۚ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ اللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا ۚ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (20)
Allah, your Creator knows that you (Muhammad) and some of those who follow you, engage in the act of worship and meditation, at times, close to two thirds of the night or half the night and other times one third of it to ponder the Revelation. Allah determines the duration of the night and the day; He knew you would not be able to determine the course He prescribed and ordained, and so He gave so merciful a turn to you. Therefore, read of the Quran as much as will put you at ease. He knows that among you there will be those who are suffering from illness, others journeying the land to seek Allah's bounty and others fighting in His cause. Therefore, read of it - the Quran - as much as will put you at ease, and perform your prayers and give alms, for alms are but the vehicles of prayer. Also lend Allah all you can of your benevolence, and whatever you advance of piety toward future security, you shall find it in heaven's realm of such a value that it reimburses you what is indeed profitable and really rewarding and invoke Allah's forgiveness; Allah is indeed Ghaforun (Forgiving) and Rahimun (Merciful) |
