عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ (1)
what now are they asking about |
عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ (2)
is it the great news of resurrection |
الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ (3)
the subject of dispute between those who argue in favour and those who argue against it |
كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ (4)
No, but they shall soon come to know |
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ (5)
No, but indeed they shall soon come to know. Then Allah reminds them by drawing their attention to His omnipotence; He says |
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا (6)
Did We not prepare the earth to be a settled habitation |
وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا (7)
and the mountains as stays that afford stabilization |
وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا (8)
We created you in pairs |
وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا (9)
We made your sleep* a repose for relief and recuperation |
وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا (10)
and the night a vestment and black was the colour chosen to absorb all light emanating from the cosmic sources of illumination |
وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا (11)
We made the day-time luminous for activity and livelihood |
وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا (12)
We built above you seven fortitudinous heavens vast and with endless amplitude |
وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا (13)
We installed a lamp glowing dispensing heat and illumination |
وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا (14)
We sent down from the rainy clouds water affluent and at times involving succession |
لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا (15)
To bring forth therewith grains and vegetation |
وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا (16)
and thickly foliaged orchards and gardens of delightful variation |
إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا (17)
Indeed the Day of Judgment foreordained falls at an absolute time Predestinated |
يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا (18)
This is the Day the trumpet is sounded and you come together in throngs embodying your souls and fully actuated |
وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا (19)
and the heaven is opened typifying open doors for the adminission of all |
وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا (20)
and the mountains are set in motion and into a mirage as if transmigrated |
إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا (21)
There and then hell is made to lie in wait |
لِّلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا (22)
It is the destined abode of the transgressors wherein they are designated |
لَّابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا (23)
Therein, they remain for ages as has been predestinated |
لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا (24)
They will taste no coolness for relief nor a drink to quench their thirst |
إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا (25)
But only boiling water and their rotten discharges for doing their worst |
جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا (26)
A requital commensurate with deeds |
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا (27)
They never believed they would be judged |
وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا (28)
and Our revelations and signs they charged with falsehood and insolently did they negate |
وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا (29)
But everything We kept on record and in a book did We incorporate |
فَذُوقُوا فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا (30)
Now taste the outcome of your deeds and plenty of the same will We increase and perpetuate |
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا (31)
But for the righteous there is victory in the attainment of their goal |
حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا (32)
Orchards and vineyards |
وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا (33)
Companions of like age featuring highest quality of attractive femininity |
وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا (34)
and a cup full of delightful drink, clear, pure and really good |
لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا (35)
No vanities shall they hear therein nor is it the place for falsehood, or discord |
جَزَاءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا (36)
A recompense from Allah, your Creator and a reward greatly in accord |
رَّبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا (37)
Creator of the heavens and the earth and all in between. AL- Rahman, with whom no one can hold discourse nor shall an argument be allowed to intervene |
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا (38)
This is the day when the spirit Jibril (Gabriel) and the angels stand in lines and keep silence at its height, except he whom AL-Rahman permits and then he says what is right |
ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا (39)
Indeed this is the day of truth, and who so desires may still turn to Allah, his Creator, for tutelary protection |
إِنَّا أَنذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَابًا (40)
We have warned you of punishment evident and quite near that deserves attention. On the day it comes to pass shall every one look at his deeds, the lawful and the lawless which his wrongful and unclean hands had committed. The infidel shall wish, then, he had remained mere dust |
