عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ (1) He frowned and turned away |
أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ (2) when the blind man came to him |
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ (3) How would you know? Perhaps he might be purified |
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ (4) or he might take heed and benefit from the reminder |
أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ (5) But he who was indifferent |
فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ (6) you give him your full attention |
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ (7) although you are not to be blamed if he does not purify himself |
وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ (8) But as for the one who came to you striving [for purification] |
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ (9) and he fears Allah |
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ (10) you let yourself to be distracted from him |
كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ (11) No indeed; this is a reminder – |
فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ (12) so whoever wills may give heed to it – |
فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ (13) on venerable pages |
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ (14) exalted and purified |
بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ (15) [preserved] in the hands of angel-scribes |
كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ (16) honorable and obedient |
قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ (17) Woe to man; how ungrateful he is |
مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ (18) From what did He create him |
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ (19) He created him from a drop of semen and proportioned him |
ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ (20) then He made the way easy for him |
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ (21) then He caused him to die and be buried |
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ (22) then when He wills, He will resurrect him |
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ (23) Yet he has not fulfilled what He commanded him |
فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ (24) Let man consider the food he eats |
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا (25) How We poured down rainwater in torrents |
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا (26) and caused the soil to split open [for sprouts] |
فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا (27) and cause grains to grow in it |
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا (28) as well as grapes and fodder |
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا (29) and olive trees and date palms |
وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا (30) and dense orchards |
وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا (31) and fruits and grass |
مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ (32) as provision for you and your livestock |
فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ (33) But when the Deafening Blast comes |
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ (34) on that Day everyone will flee from his sibling |
وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ (35) and from his mother and father |
وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ (36) and from his wife and children |
لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ (37) On that day, everyone will have enough concern of his own |
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ (38) On that Day, some faces will be bright |
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ (39) cheerful and rejoicing |
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ (40) while other faces will be dust-stained |
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ (41) covered in darkness |
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ (42) Such are the disbelievers, the wicked |
