اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ (1) The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split asunder |
وَإِن يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا وَيَقُولُوا سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ (2) Whenever they see a sign, they turn away and say, “Same old magic!” |
وَكَذَّبُوا وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ (3) They deny [the truth] and follow their desires, but every matter will reach its inevitable end |
وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُم مِّنَ الْأَنبَاءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ (4) There have already come to them stories [of destroyed nations] that are sufficient to deter them |
حِكْمَةٌ بَالِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ النُّذُرُ (5) which contain extensive wisdom, but the warnings are of no avail |
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَيْءٍ نُّكُرٍ (6) So turn away from them [O Prophet]. On the Day when the caller will summon them to a horrific event |
خُشَّعًا أَبْصَارُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ (7) with eyes downcast, they will come out of the graves like scattered locusts |
مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى الدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ الْكَافِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ (8) rushing headlong towards the caller. The disbelievers will say, “This is a hard Day!” |
۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا مَجْنُونٌ وَازْدُجِرَ (9) The people of Noah rejected [the truth] before them; they rejected Our slave and said, “He is a madman,” and he was rebuked |
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَغْلُوبٌ فَانتَصِرْ (10) So he called upon his Lord, “I am overpowered, so help me!” |
فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ (11) So We opened the gates of the sky with water pouring down in torrents |
وَفَجَّرْنَا الْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَالْتَقَى الْمَاءُ عَلَىٰ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ (12) and We caused the earth to burst forth with springs, then the waters met for a preordained purpose |
وَحَمَلْنَاهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَاحٍ وَدُسُرٍ (13) We carried him on an [Ark made] of planks and nails |
تَجْرِي بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَاءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ (14) sailing under Our [watchful] Eyes; as a reward for the one [they] denied |
وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَاهَا آيَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ (15) We have certainly left it as a sign; is there anyone to take heed |
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ (16) Then how were My punishment and My warnings |
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ (17) We have certainly made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember; is there anyone to take heed |
كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ (18) ‘Ād disbelieved. Then how were My punishment and My warnings |
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ (19) We sent against them a furious wind on a day of continuous misfortune |
تَنزِعُ النَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ (20) sweeping people away, as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees |
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ (21) Then how were My punishment and My warnings |
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ (22) We have certainly made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember; is there anyone to take heed |
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِالنُّذُرِ (23) Thamūd rejected the warnings |
فَقَالُوا أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَاحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُ إِنَّا إِذًا لَّفِي ضَلَالٍ وَسُعُرٍ (24) They said, “Shall we follow a single human being from among us? Then we would surely be in error and insanity |
أَأُلْقِيَ الذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِن بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ (25) Has the revelation been sent down upon him out of all of us? Rather, he is an insolent liar.” |
سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ الْكَذَّابُ الْأَشِرُ (26) Tomorrow they will know who the insolent liar is |
إِنَّا مُرْسِلُو النَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَارْتَقِبْهُمْ وَاصْطَبِرْ (27) We are sending the she-camel as a test for them, so watch them [O Sālih] and be patient |
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ الْمَاءَ قِسْمَةٌ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ (28) and tell them that the water is to be shared between them; each should take its drink in turn |
فَنَادَوْا صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ (29) But they called their companion, and he undertook the task and hamstrung her |
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ (30) Then how were My punishment and My warnings |
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَكَانُوا كَهَشِيمِ الْمُحْتَظِرِ (31) We sent against them a single blast, leaving them like trampled hedge-building twigs |
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ (32) We have certainly made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember; is there anyone to take heed |
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ بِالنُّذُرِ (33) The people of Lot rejected the warnings |
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَاهُم بِسَحَرٍ (34) We sent against them a storm of pebbles, except the family of Lot whom We saved before dawn |
نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي مَن شَكَرَ (35) as a blessing from Us. Thus do We reward those who give thanks |
وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا بِالنُّذُرِ (36) He had already warned them of Our punishing assault, but they doubted the warnings |
وَلَقَدْ رَاوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِ فَطَمَسْنَا أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ (37) They even demanded that he let them have their way with his angel-guests, so We blinded their eyes, [saying], “Taste My punishment and My warnings!” |
وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ (38) By the early morning a lasting torment overtook them |
فَذُوقُوا عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ (39) Taste My punishment and My warnings |
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ (40) We have certainly made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember; is there anyone to take heed |
وَلَقَدْ جَاءَ آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ النُّذُرُ (41) Indeed, warnings came to the people of Pharaoh |
كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ (42) But they rejected all of Our signs, so We seized them with the grip of the All-Mighty, Most Powerful |
أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُولَٰئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَاءَةٌ فِي الزُّبُرِ (43) Are your disbelievers [O Makkans] superior than those, or have you been granted immunity in divine Scriptures |
أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌ (44) Or do they say, “We are a united front, bound to prevail.” |
سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ (45) Soon their united front will be defeated, and they will flee |
بَلِ السَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَالسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ (46) But the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more catastrophic and more bitter |
إِنَّ الْمُجْرِمِينَ فِي ضَلَالٍ وَسُعُرٍ (47) Indeed, the wicked are in error and will be in blazes |
يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِي النَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا مَسَّ سَقَرَ (48) On the Day when they will be dragged into the Fire on their faces, [they will be told], “Taste the agony of Hell!” |
إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ (49) Indeed, We have created everything according to a determined measure |
وَمَا أَمْرُنَا إِلَّا وَاحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍ بِالْبَصَرِ (50) Our command is but a single word, which is fulfilled in the blink of an eye |
وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ (51) We have destroyed many like you [O Makkans]; is there anyone to take heed |
وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِي الزُّبُرِ (52) Everything they did is in the written records |
وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ (53) and everything, small or big, is written down |
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَنَهَرٍ (54) Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and rivers |
فِي مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ (55) seated in honor in the presence of the Most Powerful Sovereign |
